3D Design

3D Design is the foundational prerequisite course to the 300 level studio courses. In this class students explore the principles and elements of design, critique and make three-dimensional art.

Project 1 Wire Composite

Students are first asked to make a minimum of 4 spheres, 4 cubes and 4 cones with a variety sizes. Next, they are asked to assemble the shapes together to make a large composite wire sculpture. This introductory project aims to develop technical craftsmanship and compositional play.

Project 2 Principles of Design

Students are asked to first make 6 cubes to convey each of the principles of design inside the cubes. Next they are asked to make a sculpture that conveys the full array of the principles of design without the cube boundaries.  This project is an exercise in understanding of the elements and principle of design by drawing in three-dimensional space.

Project 3 Subtraction Abstraction

Students carve two small plaster blocks into sculptures of opposing emotions of their choosing. Then they are asked to carve a larger plaster block into sculpture containing the opposing emotions. This project explores emotional concepts and abstraction steps through subtractive sculpture.

Project 4 Balsa Architect

Looking at historical evolution of building technology, we can see creativity in our architecture advancement in conjunction with our technology. This project is a closer look at making sculpture which references/alludes to certain functional considerations.
